Australian Book Review’s States of Poetry Podcast is part of a major new project States of Poetry<https://www.australianbookreview.com.au/poetry/states-of-poetry>, which is intended to highlight the quality and diversity of contemporary Australian poetry. Funded by Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, this is one of the first federally arranged poetry anthologies published in this country. All states and territories will be covered with separate anthologies, each of them edited by a senior poet living in, or closely associated with, that state. The state editors will choose six local poets actively publishing new work (up to five poems per poet). The state anthologies will appear on the website with introductions from the state editor, biographies and remarks from the individual poets, recordings, and other features.

Poem inspires

Sophie Masson’s poem Frosty School Morning was chosen as the inspirational text for the illustrators who will be competing in the New England Illustration Prize, a new award for emerging and experienced illustrators resident in New England.  You can read more about it here (and also see the poem) at http://www.newc.org.au/new-england-illustration-prize.html

Sophie said the poem was very much inspired by a characteristic experience for children in New England. “I’m especially pleased because this poem was also set to music a couple of years ago for the 10th anniversary of the big regional musical event, New England Sings,” she added.  It was one of three poems commissioned for it. Here’s the link. http://www.armidaleexpress.com.au/story/2670062/photos-new-england-sings-review/

Happy New Year and a Creative Challenge

Early this year when Australian Children’s Poetry founder Di Bates called for someone to take on the site she’d started so successfully, I tentatively put up my hand. I wasn’t sure I was the right person. I do occasionally write poetry for children and sometimes it’s published in magazines and anthologies. But I certainly don’t think of myself as a poet and taking on the role of site editor felt a bit presumptuous considering my approach to writing poetry is intuitive, not educated.

I’m so glad I ignored the niggling doubts. I’ve enjoyed reading the wonderful contributions for Poem of the Day by so many talented Australian writers of poetry for children. It’s been wonderful to have you generously share your work with others. Thank you. This site couldn’t continue to attract the interest it does without your support.

Since the site began in March 2014, it’s attracted more than 141,000 views and more than 42,000 visitors. I’m sure you’ll agree that’s rather impressive for a children’s poetry site. The Poem of the Day is the most popular of all posts, followed by the listing of poets.

Because I’m not always guaranteed to have a Poem of the Day to post every day of the year, I recently introduced the Words+Pictures creative challenge. These posts have inspired some wonderful contributions, with the snail theme by far the most popular. That’s prompted me to issue a more structured creative challenge next year. Throughout 2016, every Monday from January 4 I’ll post a poetry prompt for you. I’ll mix it up with words, pictures, themes and poetic styles. Are you up for the challenge? I hope so because I’m looking forward to receiving some inspired responses…and being inspired to write more poems myself.

Happy creative New Year!

Teena

Thank you, Dianne Cook, for submitting the following items.

The CLPE Poetry Award (CLiPPA) for a book of poetry for children was launched in 2003. The award is presented annually, usually in July, for a book of poetry published in the preceding year. Check out the shortlist for CLiPPA 2015 here.

The state of Children’s Poetry has received some high-profile attention recently: poet Chrissie Gittins – featured in Let – was in the Guardian asking “why is Children’s Poetry so invisible?”: http://www.theguardian.com/childrens-books-site/2015/apr/28/why-is-childrens-poetry-so-invisible-chrissie-gittins.
