Clean Up Australia Day by Linda Davidson

Put your old gloves on and grab a sun hat.
Let’s clean up Australia while having a chat.
I’ll bring us some bags. We can fill up the bin
with plastic
cigarette butts
that rusty brown tin!

Let’s all do our part to keep this place neat.
Take pride in our home and clean up our street.
We know this will help keep
our oceans blue too.
I’m doing my bit …
How about you?

Ocean to Umbrella by Linda Davidson

Ninety-seven percent
Of our water lies in the ocean
And that’s where the water cycle
Begins its motion.

Warm water rises as a gas
In a process called evaporation.
Water from plants also ascends
This is known as transpiration.

The water vapour rises higher
Where the atmosphere is cool
And droplets join together
In a large, white, fluffy pool.

But really this is a cloud
Created by condensation.
When the cloud becomes full,
Grab your umbrella for precipitation!

The rain will fill the lakes, streams
And of course the ocean too.
Then the water cycle process
Can begin again as new.

Flying on my Butterfly by Linda Davidson

I’m off to the land of Teeny Tiny,
that’s where I’ll go today.
I’m the size of a sweet pea
and I’ll adventure far away.
Flying on my butterfly –
I’ve named her Charlotte Rose.
We’ll visit the land of mermaids –
ladies with no toes.

Flying low across the sea,
I spy them on some rocks.
Gracefully singing and combing their hair,
wearing bikini tops.
Their tails are sparkling
in the sun,
As they smile and
ask us to join their fun.

We fly down and land
on an outstretched arm,
as they all gather around
to tell us a yarn
of days gone by
with fishermen and boats.
How they saved men’s lives
and kept ships afloat.

We listened intently,
Charlotte and I,
Then thanked them,
saying, “It’s time to fly.”
Their graceful hands
wave us goodbye
As we fly up high
into the sky.

And head towards home,
to my garden with flowers.
To dream some more
and adventure for hours.

Bobby the Bilby by Linda Davidson

Bobby the Bilby is cute as can be.
He’s very shy and hides from me.
With long ears and a pointy nose
He builds his burrow with clawed toes.

I want to pat his soft grey fur.
Down a burrow he dashes in a blur.
Should I wait in the pale moonlight,
or come back again tomorrow night?

Christmas Star by Linda Davidson

Looking out the window, while sipping on my chai,

I saw a shining star in the clear night sky.

And wondered, was this the star the wise men saw too,

Two thousand years ago when baby Jesus was brand new?

Summer Fun! by Linda Davidson

Summer has arrived and it’s hot, hot, hot!

Grab your togs and towel, I know a great spot.

To the beach we’ll go for a swim in the sea.

Playing in the waves will cool us down, you’ll see.

Let’s take the blue esky to have a picnic lunch.

I’ll pack some wraps and fruit to have a tasty munch.

We’ll lay down the checkered rug under shady trees

And eat our plums and cherries in the ocean breeze.

Then it will be time to find the ice-cream shop.

I’ll have macadamia – topped with the lot!

As our scorching summer day comes to a close

A thunder storm might cool us down and give the town a hose.

December Prompt and Farewell

LOTS to celebrate in December! Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, St. Nicholas Day, Bodhi Day, Las Posadas and of course the summer/winter solstice. Wherever you and whatever you celebrate let us know by sending in your poems to ozchildrenspoetry@gmail.com.

Please note the website will not be checked regularly over the Christmas/New Year period but will start up again around January 10th.

And this will be my final post before handing over the reigns to the very capable hands of Linda Davidson and Celia Berrell. Both have been staunch supporters of ACP and have contributed some wonderful poetry to the site.

Thank you to everyone who has posted, liked or subscribed over the past two years! Keep your wonderful poems coming in 2026 and beyond. Have a safe and happy holiday season.

Dad’s Watching Footy by Linda Davidson

“C’mon little Davo, the ball’s bounced and there’s no more waiting.”

I climb on the couch as my Dad begins explaining,
“Essendon, little Davo, is the team that we’ll be barracking.
You’ll see running and jumping and kicking and handballing.”
“Aha,” grins Dad – “Can you believe it’s now raining.”
The game goes on and no-one’s complaining.
It’s fun as I watch their clothes become muddy with staining.
“C’mon umpire, that’s holding the ball,” says Dad exclaiming.
“Pass the ball son, you’re not out there training.”

I think about telling Dad they can’t hear but decide it’s simpler refraining.
The Bombers scored a goal and now there’s ten minutes remaining.
Dad jumps out of his chair and screams, “That’s amazing!”
Dad’s so excited ‘cause now his team’s gaining.
The player looks high at the posts and kicks while aiming.
The Bombers have won and the crowd is dancing and waving.
My Dad thinks he’s there and is clapping and raving.

I look from my Dad to the screen and wonder which is more entertaining.
