Christmas Star by Linda Davidson

Looking out the window, while sipping on my chai,

I saw a shining star in the clear night sky.

And wondered, was this the star the wise men saw too,

Two thousand years ago when baby Jesus was brand new?

Summer Fun! by Linda Davidson

Summer has arrived and it’s hot, hot, hot!

Grab your togs and towel, I know a great spot.

To the beach we’ll go for a swim in the sea.

Playing in the waves will cool us down, you’ll see.

Let’s take the blue esky to have a picnic lunch.

I’ll pack some wraps and fruit to have a tasty munch.

We’ll lay down the checkered rug under shady trees

And eat our plums and cherries in the ocean breeze.

Then it will be time to find the ice-cream shop.

I’ll have macadamia – topped with the lot!

As our scorching summer day comes to a close

A thunder storm might cool us down and give the town a hose.

December Prompt and Farewell

LOTS to celebrate in December! Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, St. Nicholas Day, Bodhi Day, Las Posadas and of course the summer/winter solstice. Wherever you and whatever you celebrate let us know by sending in your poems to ozchildrenspoetry@gmail.com.

Please note the website will not be checked regularly over the Christmas/New Year period but will start up again around January 10th.

And this will be my final post before handing over the reigns to the very capable hands of Linda Davidson and Celia Berrell. Both have been staunch supporters of ACP and have contributed some wonderful poetry to the site.

Thank you to everyone who has posted, liked or subscribed over the past two years! Keep your wonderful poems coming in 2026 and beyond. Have a safe and happy holiday season.

Dad’s Watching Footy by Linda Davidson

“C’mon little Davo, the ball’s bounced and there’s no more waiting.”

I climb on the couch as my Dad begins explaining,
“Essendon, little Davo, is the team that we’ll be barracking.
You’ll see running and jumping and kicking and handballing.”
“Aha,” grins Dad – “Can you believe it’s now raining.”
The game goes on and no-one’s complaining.
It’s fun as I watch their clothes become muddy with staining.
“C’mon umpire, that’s holding the ball,” says Dad exclaiming.
“Pass the ball son, you’re not out there training.”

I think about telling Dad they can’t hear but decide it’s simpler refraining.
The Bombers scored a goal and now there’s ten minutes remaining.
Dad jumps out of his chair and screams, “That’s amazing!”
Dad’s so excited ‘cause now his team’s gaining.
The player looks high at the posts and kicks while aiming.
The Bombers have won and the crowd is dancing and waving.
My Dad thinks he’s there and is clapping and raving.

I look from my Dad to the screen and wonder which is more entertaining.

Cool For School by Linda Davidson

I climb on a chair
To brush my hair
Cause the mirror is too high up.
My teeth feel grimy.
I’ll make them shiny
With toothpaste I keep in a cup.

Next is my face.
What a disgrace!
Warm water will do the trick.
“There’s cheese on my chin,”
I say with a grin.
Then wipe it off real quick.

I’m excited today.
I’m ready to play.
And now I look pretty cool.
I jump on the floor,
And head to the door.
“Muumm, I’m ready for school!”

Thrive in 2025! by Linda Davidson

Australia has been called the lucky country,
Most people have clothes and rarely go hungry.

We are free to vote and have our say,
But is it best to get our own way?

Our multicultural nation is full of colourful people.
We should respect one another and treat them as equal.

With a variety of religion, upbringing and race,
Let’s love one another and show plenty of grace.

Our differences make for vibrant discussion.
There’s so much we can learn from hearing each other.

Try praying for peace as you make some new friends,
And hope for a future where love never ends.

Let’s all come together in twenty, twenty-five,
To listen and learn, then together we’ll thrive.

Choose Kindness by Linda Davidson

Let’s create a kinder world
One where love, doesn’t need to be earned.
Where smiling, helping, joy and laughter
Are things all of us chase after.

Offer to make Grandad a cup of tea.
He might be feeling quite lonely.
Your presence will bring love to his day
And improve his mood as he watches you play.

How about a smile for someone new?
You just don’t know what they’re going through.
Your kindness may fade their worries away,
And give them hope to enjoy their day.

What about picking your mum a flower?
To show her kindness has special power.
She’ll look at you with adoration in her eyes.
You’ll both be better off – you will realise.

It’s quite easy really to show compassion and be kind.
I believe it’s the way that we’ve been designed.
So have a go at finding a creative way,
To show someone kindness on your travels today.

Galloping Grey by Linda Davidson

What’s your hot tip? Its Melbourne Cup day today.
The race that stops the nation is about to get underway.

The jockeys are ready with their colours on display.
But it’s the horses, who are the stars of the day.
With chestnuts so shiny and blacks with a blaze;
Bays with white socks and large dapple greys.
Thoroughbreds prancing and biting at the bit;
Waiting at the barriers looking mighty and super-fit.

Suddenly the crowd becomes quiet.
The barriers open and horses jump out.
The fans in the stands are now screaming
And each one is secretly dreaming
That their horse will be the winner
So they can boast at tonight’s dinner.

There’s three thousand, two hundred metres to go.
Which horse will speed up and put on a show.
They’re bunched tight ‘round the track
So there’s no looking back.
Hooves sounding like thunder
As we all gaze in wonder.
Which horse will take the lead
And become today’s famous steed.

They’re on the home stretch and some horses are tiring.
Nostrils are flaring and tails wildly flying.
But look at number twenty-two
He’s found a gap and galloped through.
The jockey riding knows what to do.
He leans forward letting the gelding have his head.
As he crosses the line, one whole length ahead.

The crowd is roaring
and emotions are soaring.
But the star of the day is the large dapple grey.
He knows he’s done well and was happy to play.
Now all sweaty, he lets out a snort and a neigh
And looks forward to pats and some extra hay.
