I love birthdays

Welcome down to Earth days

Full of fun and mirth days

Widening the girth days

Evaluating worth days

Leading back to earth days

I love birthdays!

To A Spider by Norah Colvin

Now look here, Spider, I’m grateful to you,
For eating flies and cockroaches too.
But in my shower when it’s time for my bath –
That, I’m afraid, incurs my wrath.

With this broom, I’ll chase you out.
Please don’t jump or you’ll make me shout.
Stay very still while I get the brush,
Then into the toilet for one big flush.

Oh, poor little spider, what have I done?
I’ve gone and killed you. That’s not fun.
You didn’t deserve it, not one bit.
You should have hidden where my broom couldn’t fit.

Another spider? Does this make two?
Are you a brother? Oh no . . . it’s you!
I thought you drowned, but you’re still alive!
What’s your secret? How’d you survive?

Now you’re back, I am relieved.
No longer must I be aggrieved.
But please take heed, my leggy friend.
Don’t come too close – it will be your end.

Man, It’s Hot! by Norah Colvin

They stood side by side in a paddock one day,

Two tall gentlemen watching children at play.

When seen from a distance they both looked the same,

Just silently watching, not joining the game.

The sun warmed them gradually, ever so slow,

The heat barely noticed till both had to go.

“It’s hot!” said the first as he left for the day.

The second said nothing, just melted away.

When later the children came looking around,

Not even one trace of the men could be found.

With sadness they realised what they had forgot:

That snowmen can’t last when the weather gets hot!

A Very Funny Animal by Norah Colvin

It isn’t quite a beaver, though it has a beaver’s tail,

A freshwater-living mammal, much smaller than a whale.

It’s something like an otter with body dressed in fur.

Its bill and feet are duck-like but it has a poisonous spur.

It burrows into riverbanks to lay its eggs therein.

It swims around in waters while having not one fin.

If you come across it, I urge you not to scream.

It wouldn’t ever harm you. It’s just a monotreme.

Its name can be quite tricky, but you’ll learn it without fuss.

So try:

               Or –

                      Or – nith – or

                             Ornithorhynchus,

You might call it the platypus.
