Adeline Rose’s Birthday Party by Nicola Phillips

Adeline Rose just loved to pose,

Her mum would say, “eyes this way, chin up, that’s my girl.”

Every chance she got

Whether it was inconvenient or not.

Adeline Rose would rise to the occasion

Never once flinching, posing without persuasion.

This went on for quite some time,

Until one day, Adeline Rose refused to obey.

She had had simply enough.

No cajoling, pleading or bribing would make her sway.

Adeline Rose turned her back,

This Instagram lark was merely a hack.

Her mum was devastated but what could she do?

If Adeline Rose refused her birthday party too?

Food and drink were already bought,

“It cannot just grind to nothing – to nought?”

But Adeline Rose stuck to her guns,

No party or posing – she was done.

Adeline Rose was keen to restore

Her life as a dog and nothing more!

Party Pandemonium by Jenny Erlanger

I’d blown the birthday candles out
and sliced up all the cake
and then I did a silly thing.
I made a grave mistake.

I chose to do a clever trick
I’d seen performed before,
a trick to stun my party guests,
to dazzle them, for sure.

And so I grabbed the table cloth
and yanked with all my might,
anticipating gasps of awe
and squeals of pure delight.

But sadly, nothing stayed in place,
I can’t forget the sound
of glasses, bowls and dinner plates
all crashing to the ground.

The birthday cake, the party pies
and every other treat
went hurtling briefly through the air
then landed at our feet.

I could have been an instant star
but I’d just blown my chance.
If only I had made the time
to practise in advance.

I love birthdays

Welcome down to Earth days

Full of fun and mirth days

Widening the girth days

Evaluating worth days

Leading back to earth days

I love birthdays!

Birthday Eve by Nadine Cranenburgh

Birthday Eve

My presents are boxed up all brightly

I’m not sleepy, not even slightly

When I hear my dad snore

I’ll unwrap three or four

Then wrap them back up again tightly.
