reaching out to another
acknowledging they are worthy
noticing someone else’s need
daring to step out and do
observing a special opportunity
motivated to spring into action
affirming the receiver’s value to society
courageously showing respect and honour

Stop Work by Jenny Erlanger

Our microwave’s groaning,
the dishwasher’s moaning,
the fridge has developed a whir.
Our blender’s not blending,
it’s only pretending.
The food’s barely given a stir.

Our dryer’s stopped drying.
it’s not even trying
but that’s not what irks me the most.
The toaster I’m using
has started refusing
to pop up my pieces of toast.

I’m sensing defiance
from every appliance.
It must be their chores they dislike.
I’m wondering whether
they’ve plotted together
to stage this ridiculous strike?

VILLAGE by Graham Seal

Dr Seuss said it all:
‘A person’s a person,
no matter how small’.

Let’s say the same for a village:
It isn’t the size that matters,
but how many hearts
call it home.

A Poem by Warren Cox

a poem can be quite funny

a poem can be quite sad

some poems are really sensible

while others are quite mad

some are rather silly

designed to fashion laughs

with talk of roosters ducks and geese

or large long necked giraffes

but poems can tell a story

not just be rhyming word

a poem can make your heart take flight

on strong emotions stirred

a poem can give you pleasure

wonderous and sublime

of which there is no measure

take you to another time

and poems belong to everyone

just follow where they lead

turn the page and there they are

in thought word and deed

for poetry is ancient

a timeless limitless cloak

of thoughts and feelings infinite

as old as language spoke

Arrivals and departures

by Jenny Erlanger

You’ll soon be walking through that door.

I can’t stay still a moment more.

I’m racing up and down the floor.

Can’t wait to say hello!

I’m here again with teary eyes

as everybody hugs and cries.

The air is filled with sad goodbyes.

Can’t stand to see you go!

Feeling Weird

by Allan Cropper

Have you woken up to find
you don’t know how you feel?
That’s how I felt when I woke up today.
I tried to find a word that would
express the way I felt
but there were not the words that would convey
the feelings I was feeling, for
it all felt so surreal,
a feeling like no other I have known.
I cannot find the words to tell you
how it is I felt.
I’ll have to make up new words of my own.

I felt flagisticatious,
all wimbillical inside.
Indubicartly grobble-poxed, was I.
Befuddulant and jingle-jacked,
quite micro-ballical,
which can’t have been too pleasing to the eye.
I felt so astro-numical,
anthortical in fact,
in a very catostrismic kind of way.
And that, my friend, just sums it up –
exactly how I felt –
the way I felt when I awoke today.

HIGGLEDY PIGGLEDY

 by Allan Cropper

It’s a topsy turvy kind of day

My head is in a spin

What’s down is up, what’s up is down

I’m neither out nor in

I’ll try on lots of outfits

and brush and style my hair

It’s a topsy turvy kind of day

but I don’t really care

It’s a muddily fuddily way I feel

My head is in a fog

I think I’ll put my runners on

and go out for a jog

I’ll race the other joggers

to see if I can win

It’s a muddily fuddily way I feel

but comfy in my skin

It’s a higgledy piggledy afternoon

My head is in a cloud

I think I’ll put my headphones on

Play music way up loud

I’ll dance around my bedroom

where no one else can see

It’s a higgledy piggledy afternoon

and that’s just fine with me
