There is probably a video clip of leaves falling on YouTube they could watch. The poem drifts across the page in imitation of the way leaves drift down in the wind.
My thoughts were that the leaves are farewelling the tree, waving a goodbye as they fly for the first and last time, about how the leaves were returning to earth to nourish the tree and give life to more leaves. I hope this helps.
