“George” by Kerry Gittins

George! George! Are you listening? Did you hear me?
Are you ready for the frenzy when the fishing boat comes in?
You certainly don’t look it. You’re acting way too calm.
The captain’s coming in and he will sound the fish alarm.

I hear you loud and clear my dear, no need for your concern.
Don’t worry about Phil or Pete, they’re way down near the stern.
As you can see, I’m first in line. The rest don’t stand a chance.
Those yummy fish will soon be ours. We’ll do our supper dance.

George! George! Are you sure you’ve got this covered?
The fishing net’s about to drop and you’re still standing here!
You know how quick the others are, especially your brother.
You’d better get on out there new, before we miss another!

I hear you loud and clear my dear. I’m right on top of things.
Have your forgotten last week’s race? Who had the fastest wings?
You need to have more faith in me. I’m feeling quite upset.
Oh-oh! Oh no! Look out below. It’s sneaky Greg Gannet!

George! George! Hurry up! You need to go!
His mates have heard him squawking and they’re flying in behind.
No need to worry, Pip my dear, the gannets don’t want fish.
That squawking is the hymen as their chips fly off the dish!

Just listen.
If you’re very quiet …

you can hear things,
stranger than the night itself;

the creaks and crackles
like the black of a wrapper,

or whispers like the breath,
or moans, many times, distantly;

you can hear the noises
of coffee poured, or a rumbling teevee,

languishing laughter,
making out sense and time;

it could be you hear nothing,
you really do hear nothing,

so … what do you SEE?

They may live
In dry deserts,
But it’s not their
Just desserts!
They are true survivors,
Their poohs are
Ground revivers
In the hottest desert spots!
They don’t envy
You your jungle,
They LOVE
What they have got!

Once I had a seesaw
That lifted me up high.
I saw across my neighbours,
Right up into the sky.

My seesaw let me see so far
I saw the distant sea,
So now I call my seesaw
A seesawsawseasee
