‘Puff’, the Magic Dragon by Toni Newell

‘Puff’ was a magic dragon,

Who lived by the sea,

Had a friend, Jackie Paper,

And had a friend in me.

He may have sailed with Jackie,

Upon the ocean blue,

But used to play with me ashore,

This story being true.

He wagged his tail behind him,

Whilst walking he would roar,

And everyone loved magic ‘Puff’,

He was gentle to the core.

When Jackie Paper passed away,

‘Puff’ was very sad,

He roared aloud in his grief,

Having lost his comrade.

We walked the street together,

His scales glistening in the sun,

Remembering Jackie Paper,

And recalling all the fun.

Yes, dragons last forever,

And he outlasted me,

One day we’ll be together again,

Magic ‘Puff’,  Jackie Paper and me.

Argentinosaurus

Argentinosaurus,

The largest dinosaur of all,

Grew to forty meters,

Measurement overall.

Could weigh a hundred tons,

And was a herbivore,

Would need to eat a lot of greens,

Of that you can be sure.

They lived a long time ago,

Ninety-seven million years,

Pronounced ‘AHR-gen-TEEN-uh-SAWR-us’,

They were big with no visible ears.

The Illusive Toy

Whirr, whirr, bang, bang,

What a noise you make,

Spinning, spinning, all around,

I’m scared you might break.

You have a captive audience,

All mesmerised by you,

Darting here and darting there,

But seldom in our view.

You appear to be mysterious,

We don’t know what you are,

You dash in and out so quickly,

We only see you from afar.

My mind’s so undecided,

Is it just technology?

For I have no clue what it is,

Or what it’s meant to be.

“Kind Boomerang” by Toni Newell

I used to throw a Frisbee,

But it would never come back,

Billy Joe would make it worse,

The Frisbee he’d hijack.

One day I saw a programme,

About Aborigines,

There it was, the boomerang,

Thrown with so much ease.

The magic of the boomerang,

When thrown it comes back,

Saving time and energy,

Searching down some track.

It took a little time to learn,

But I’ve got it in the bag,

My boomerang is kind to me,

It returns, I shouldn’t brag.

The Slippery Slide

I’m the old slippery slide,

King of the playground,

All the kids slide down me,

As squeals and laughter sound.

Many things have been replaced,

However, I’m still there,

And lots of little bottoms,

Still slide down without a care.

Seasons?

Winter’s here,

Autumn’s gone,

Next we know,

Spring’s along.

Time just flies,

It’s hard to say,

Which season,

We’re in today.

Winter’s cold,

Frost or not,

Spring is wet

Summer’s hot.

It used to be,

Seasons defined,

But not today,

They seem entwined.

Goodbye Teddies

Now life’s almost normal,

And time has moved along,

As I look at windows now,

The teddy bears have gone.

It was so great to see them,

Sitting on the window sill,

Or on the fence or in a tree,

Or wherever was the will.

During this terrible time,

It made us feel as one,

All sharing fear and concern,

The teddy bears were fun.

Thanks to those who took the time,

To share their teddy bear,

It displayed unity and kindness,

And showed  all you did care.

The Wedge-tailed Eagle

Graceful wings sore through the sky,

Majestically they fly on high,

Gliding, then they flap again,

Over paddocks of green terrain.

Drifting as they look for prey,

On this warm and sunny day.

Movement spotted on the ground,

Rabbits hopping all around.

The eagle swoops, its talons out,

Plucks a rabbit as it hops about.

Flies back home with all its might,

To enjoy supper that very night.

The Australian Budgerigar, (Melopsittacus undulates) nicknamed Budgie.

In the wild they are green and yellow with black scalloped markings. They are found throughout the drier parts of Australia.

In captivity they have been bred resulting in a wide variety of colours amongst which are blue, whites, greys and yellow.

They are a very popular pet and can be taught to speak.

They are around 18 cm in length with a wingspan of 30 cm.

Their diet consists of seeds, greens and fruit.

BudgieBlue’

I used to have a budgerigar,

And his name was ‘Blue’,

He’d look into his mirror,

And chirp a song or two.

At night his cage was covered,

We’d teach him how to speak,

Constantly repeating,

“Pretty boy”, many times a week.

Finally one morning,

Blue was on his swing,

Saying “pretty boy, pretty boy”

It was the greatest thing.

“Winter Comfort” by Toni Newell

I love a winters evening,

Sitting on my settee,

Billy’s head on my lap,

Feeling warm and comfy.

Outside the wind is blowing,

And I can hear the rain,

Pelting on the window,

Water gushing down the drain.

The television’s on,

Don’t need to rush to bed,

Tomorrow is the weekend,

Fun and freedom lay ahead.

But in this moment I’ll enjoy,

My time with Billy Joe,

Snuggled on the settee,

Watching a TV show.
