Almost Christmas by Pauline Cleary

Familiar tunes float through stores;
holly, tinsel, wreathes on doors;
sparkling trees, the scent of pine.
Can it be almost Christmas time?

Elves on shelves, all playing tricks;
bells and baubles, candy sticks;
Silent Night the carolers chime
Maybe it’s nearly Christmas time.

Whispered plans and secret lists;
crinkly paper, wrapping gifts;
fairy lights on trees entwined.
It surely must be Christmas time.

Kindness, sharing, reaching out
to friends and family and all around;
peace and joy in hearts and minds.
Yes, it really is Christmas Time!

The First Christmas Gift: A Christian View by Monty Edwards

It’s very plain that Christmas, will very soon be here:

Since shops and stores are busy and schools closed for the year:

A time we think of presents and lots of yummy food,

Yet not time to be greedy, or selfish, even rude!

Since some folk are not wealthy, nor have a lot to spare,

But still can give their friendship and show you that they care.

For God Himself’s a Giver, who gave the world his Son,

To be our sinless Saviour and die for everyone.

This Gift arrived at Christmas. It’s why we celebrate.

In churches round the nation we Christians congregate.

We like to show we’re grateful for Jesus, God’s great Gift

To focus on such wondrous news gives each of us a lift!

His Gift’s not one that ages. It’s never out of date

God wants all to receive Him before it is too late,

A gift of real forgiveness, with heaven added too!

A gift received through Jesus, God planned for me and you!

My Wish For Christmas Day by James Aitchison

I want a better world this Christmas,

where wars and famine end,

where light and laughter banish darkness,

where everyone’s a friend.

Instead of tinsel I’d like trust,

where fear has gone away.

And no one has to go without,

this year on Christmas day.

Bow wow, I’ve been a good boy,

For Christmas I’d like a bone.

A bone that’s big and juicy,

A bone I can call my own.

Santa, Santa, I’ve been good,

Look — here’s a ball for the tree.

Come on, Santa, I’m your friend,

There’s no better dog than me!

They looked so very tempting,

The ball-balls on the tree,

Bright and multi coloured,

They were inviting me.

Some sparkled, others shiny,

Just hanging on the tree,

I jumped up and grabbed one,

And hid it happily.

I was alone in the house,

So, I stole another one,

I added it to my pile,

This was so much fun.

I jumped up for a third attempt,

When I heard the door,

My family stood in front of me,

Whilst I crashed to the floor.

“Billy Joe, you naughty dog”,

My owner yelled at me,

“How dare you take the ball-balls off,

Our beautiful Christmas tree”.

I bowed my head with regret,

And all that they could see,

Was the ball-ball in my mouth,

They laughed and patted me.

Christmas Trees

Let’s buy Christmas trees,

That last forever,

Made of wood or plastic,

Or anything clever.

Let’s save living trees,

Being cut down in their prime,

Just to serve a purpose,

For a very short time.

It seems such a waste,

To kill a tree that is living,

When there are many alternatives,

Which are far more forgiving.

Over in the corner,

Underneath the tree,

There’s a shiny silver present

That is wrapped up just for me.

It’s been teasing me and taunting

For almost one whole week.

I’ll unpick a tiny corner,

And I’ll take a tiny peek.

The sticky tape is tricky,

So, I’ll rip a little more.

Then I’ll put it back right after

Just the way it was before.

Oh no! I’ve pulled too hard!

Silver paper’s on the floor!

My present is exposed

And my mum is at the door!

She’ll be super-duper angry!

And Santa will be too!

He’ll put me on the bad list –

Although it isn’t true…

I really am a good kid;

My Nan says I’m a joy!

I only wanted one small peek

At my new Christmas toy.

My only hope right now

Is to hide behind this chair.

If I stay completely still,

Then my mum won’t know I’m there.

She steps into the room,

And she cries out, ‘You’re so silly!’

I think that I’ve been caught,

But she’s staring straight at Mille!

Patience is a virtue?

I don’t agree with that.

Check all your presents early

And then blame it on the cat!

We don’t have to wait until Christmas

to share some intangible gifts.

It could be a morsel of caring

wrapped up in a smile, set adrift to sail on a seascape of glances

to bridge any saddening rifts

and reach that deserving receiver

we yearn in our heart to uplift.

“Climate Change is Changing Christmas” by James Aitchison

Season’s greetings — but which season?

Bush fires start much earlier now.

When the country’s devastated,

What joy will light the Christmas hour?

Stumps of houses, chimneys blackened,

Nowhere for Santa Claus to stop!

No trees this year decked with tinsel,

They’re just a charred and cheerless crop.

With all our presents wrapped in dust,

And no grass to feed the reindeer,

I hate to think of Christmas morn;

It will get worse year after year!

When climate change changes Christmas,

No Santa through the sky will dash.

Yes, we’ll still have our white Christmas

But a Christmas all white with ash.

Christmas time

Christmas means the gathering of our enormous family

When we always enjoy special time together happily.

We welcome all in our family brood

Babies new, cousins kind and uncles rude!

The presents are stacked high under the tree

Little ones collect their gifts gleefully.

The table is set; the drinks are on ice,

The red wine is mulled with a touch of spice.

Food is loaded to the brim of each plate

Make sure to tuck in before it’s too late!

Then as quick as a wink, the day’s over again.

The dishes are all washed and left to drain.

Then it’s time for a nap, maybe a swim or a game,

Before the planning for next year begins all over again!
