Kathryn Apel

Kathryn Apel was born and bred a farm girl – and is still scared of cows! (Her pets are the exception.) Kat lives amongst the gum trees, kangaroos and cattle on a grazing property in Queensland.

Kathryn writes rhyming poetry and free verse. Her verse novel for younger readers, Bully on the Bus, was published by UQP in 2014. Her rhyming picture book, This is the Mud! (Lothian Hachette) has been read by Justine on ABC Play School. Kat has had poems published in Pearson Magazine, the NSW School Magazine, Junior Journal, and Alphabet Soup.

Kathryn co-ordinates Month of Poetry each January – a family friendly challenge to write a poem-a-day for the month. She also teaches part-time, conducts author talks, juggles life, and writes as often as she is able – which sometimes isn’t enough!

Kathryn Apel shape poem

The Musings of Maxim; Edit-err

I’ve spotted my stakes

and dotted my tees,

crossed my eyes

and queued my peas.

I’ve cut and confuddled

confounding clichés

but I’m dashed if I know

how to turn a phrase.
