October Prompts

This year is literally flying by and I’ve already missed some important dates to celebrate in October! We still have United Nations Day, Children’s Week, Diwali (festival of light and hope), Chuseok (South Korean harvest festival) and of course Halloween to come but it’s really interesting when you start looking up what actually gets celebrated in October. I mean who knew there is a National Bathtub Day or a National Train Your Brain Day?

Whatever you celebrate in October we’d love to hear about it. Send your poems into ozchildrenspoetry@gmail.com. Remember if you send in a photo with your poem please include the correct attribution link and make sure it is free to use.

Mother’s Days by P.J.Rodriguez

Why do mothers have one date
on which we choose to celebrate
the love we feel for all they share;
for all their work; how much they care?

Throughout the year – on other days –
must we store our pride and praise?
Should we save our hugs and thanks
in special Honour Mother banks?

Are we meant to leave love locked
inside a vault, our feelings blocked,
until that Thanks Mum! payday nears,
rewarding Mother’s sweat and tears?

Mothers toil, protect, and nourish,
every day, to help us flourish.
Spoil your mum on Mother’s Day …
and All Year Round, in every way.

March Prompt: Reflections and Celebrations.

Two very important observances occur this March – Ramadan and Easter.

Ramadan is from March 11 to April 9, and Easter falls between March 29 and April 1.

Both of these offer a time for reflection, community and celebration.

I love birthdays

Welcome down to Earth days

Full of fun and mirth days

Widening the girth days

Evaluating worth days

Leading back to earth days

I love birthdays!

World Pasta Day by James Aitchison

We’re celebrating pasta
all around the world,
spaghetti and linguine
are being swirled and twirled.

Ravioli’s all the rage!
Rigatoni’s lots of fun!
I think my gnocchi rocks!
Some penne anyone?

Macaroni and fusilli,
canelloni, fettuccine,
tagliatelle, vermicelli,
agnolini, tortellini —

Let’s celebrate them all,
every kind of pasta!
There’s nothing like a pasta
to fill your tummy faster.

Looking At Pasta by Toni Newell

So many types of pasta
Of many varied shapes
All of the same ingredient
Yet a difference it makes.
There’s rigatoni and penne
And also shells and bows
Spaghetti, tagliatelle,
Linguini, and on it goes.
And the sauces are so varied
Bolognese, to start the list
But the cook can be creative
And give the sauce a twist.
It’s no wonder that it’s honoured
For its versatility
An ingredient of many shapes
Can produce such variety.
So, let us celebrate
On the twenty fifth of October
World Pasta Day
This year and forever after.

Dark Matter Day by Celia Berrell

Most of our universe
seems to be …
MISSING! NOT THERE
for us to see.

We call this DARK MATTER
because we agree,
although we can’t see it,
we’ve shown, quite clearly,
this stuff interacts with
GRAVITY.

Remember October
will end with this quest
as Halloween
is one of our best
spooky and scary festivities
for magic and mayhem
and mysteries.

And so, it’s become
the perfect way
to celebrate science’s
DARK MATTER DAY!

Australia Day Fireworks

Explosions of colour burst out of blackness

In spattered circles of red and green

On the dark canvas of the heavens

Rockets streak skyward

Sending showers of silver stars

Above upturned faces

Children gaze open-mouthed

In awe and amazement

At the pyro technicians’ art.

Poetry Prompt #25

Monty says: The explosions of bungers, jumping jacks and the humble Tom Thumb on “cracker night” in my childhood came immediately to mind with the prompt. Today’s fireworks are even more spectacular.
